Weekly themes (below) will be explored in a multitude of meaningful and interesting ways to ensure that each camper ends the week with a well-rounded understanding of the overall theme, in addition to a better understanding and appreciation of nature in general. The weekly theme is explored through a combination of the following activities: close observations, investigations, simple projects, nature journals, walks on the trails, art activities, related group games, songs, and more. The Amazing Race - Week 3
This program is designed to incorporate a mix of intellectually stimulating and hands-on activities to engage participants in a summer adventure. Each three-week session will explore a different topic (below) that will culminate in a project in which the participants will apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills. Each day will involve investigating science and environmental issues across a variety of topics. We recommend that Adventurers attend all three weeks of a session for the best experience. - - Weeks 1-3 - June 28-July 2, July 6-9, July 12-16: - Iron Chef BNC - Whats for lunch As an Iron Chef, you will be challenged to create delicious dishes or crazy concoctions featuring food from the garden. Think carrots, salad greens, peas, radishes...the flavor possibilities are endless when youre using fresh herbs like basil, oregano, and chives. Days will be filled with food experiments, cooking, field trips to collect ingredients, and time spent in the garden. On some days you may be challenged to come up with a delicious dish featuring one ingredient or a dish that combines two unlikely foods. We will learn simple kitchen tricks and even take field trips to find fresh cherries or raspberries for tasty desserts. Through gardening and cooking you will learn about the benefits of food grown close to home for humans and the environment. - - Weeks 4-6 - July 19-23, July 26-30, August 2-6: - Survivor BNC - With all of our modern conveniences, we sometimes forget that for most of human history people have lived outdoors. Have you ever made a shelter from sticks and leaves Do you know any common plants that you can eat Have you ever had to work with other people to get things done or win challenges Can you be creative and resourceful Come see if you have what it takes to survive in the wild During these three weeks, build on success and learn from failure while constructing creative solutions to several challenges. Youll have exciting outdoor adventures while learning how to use appropriate tools and materials. Join us as we create, design, take apart, and build on our ideas. - Week 5 (July 26-30) will include an overnight camping trip. It is optional for everyone and there is no extra cost. - - Weeks 7-9 - August 9-13, August 16-20, August 23-27: - The Amazing Race - Discover the diversity of Massachusetts as your team races to complete challenges, solve clues, and avoid roadblocks. Our state is filled with mysterious habitats, rare and endangered wildlife, and puzzling natural artifacts. Our quality of life is directly tied to the land and the water around us, and to all the organisms that share our urban ecosystem. How does soil control the climate How do plants work to protect against floods and mud slides Find the answers to these questions and more during a three-week session in which you will meet scientists, community leaders, local historians, and others as you pursue your quest across this great state. - - - Registration is on a first come, first served basis.
